Reminiscences of two years service in the Union army, 1865-1895.

Based on the diaires he kept while in service. Detailed accounts of his activities and camp life from the time he enlisted to his return to New York City. The volume includes two photographs of Burgen as a young man (one in uniform), and one of him after the war. The folder includes his military discharge, 29 Nov. 1865; a list of members of the 1st Mounted Rifles at their Conesus Lake reunion on 12 June 1889, with a newspaper notice of the gathering; a note regarding Burgen's hospitalizations for illness during his war service; the lyrics to a patriotic song about the American flag, written the day before the U.S. entered World War I; and several small needlepoint samples, one with a cross, the others bearing words, e.g., "faith, hope & charity."

Born in Mamaroneck, Westchester County, N.Y. Enlisted on 4 Jan. 1864 in New York City; served as clerk for Company K, 1st New York Mounted Rifles. The 1st New York Mounted Rifles mustered out 21 July 1865 by consolidation with the 3rd New York Cavalry to form the 4th Regiment New York Provisional Cavalry. Burgen was discharged from the 4th Provisional Cavalry on 29 Nov. 1865. After the war, Burgen worked as a clerk in Buffalo, N.Y. He died 11 Apr. 1895. From the description of Remini...
